A beautiful kitchen can still feel disappointing if the lighting leaves worktops in shadow, makes colours look wrong or creates glare when you sit down to eat. Knowing how to plan kitchen lighting early means the room works just as well on a dark winter morning as it does when family and friends are round for dinner.
Lighting should be considered alongside the layout, cabinetry, appliances and ceiling plan – not chosen as a last-minute finishing touch. The best schemes combine practical task lighting with comfortable general light and a few well-placed details that make the room feel finished.
Start with how you use the kitchen
Before choosing a pendant or a run of spotlights, think about what happens in the room from morning to night. A kitchen used mainly for quick family meals needs a different approach from a large open-plan space that also handles homework, entertaining and relaxing.
Walk through your proposed layout and identify the key working areas: the sink, hob, preparation space, breakfast bar and dining table. Consider where people will stand and where they will sit. This simple exercise highlights where clear, shadow-free light is essential and where a softer atmosphere is more useful.
Natural daylight matters too. A kitchen with large south-facing doors may need less daytime lighting than a room with one small window, but every Scottish home still needs a well-planned artificial lighting scheme for darker afternoons and evenings. Do not assume window light will reach the back of a deep worktop or a tall bank of units.
Use three layers of kitchen lighting
The most reliable way to plan kitchen lighting is to use layers. Each layer has a distinct job, and together they prevent the flat, over-lit look that comes from relying on one central fitting.

Position lights around cabinetry, not just the ceiling
A common mistake is finalising electrical points before the kitchen design is complete. Cabinet depths, tall housings, ceiling bulkheads and extractor positions all influence where fittings can go. Planning them together avoids downlights being hidden by open doors or casting light behind the person using the worktop.
For wall cabinets, place ceiling downlights far enough forward that the light reaches the front half of the worktop. A fitting positioned too close to the wall often lights the cabinet doors rather than the surface below. Under-cabinet lighting then provides the stronger, more direct light needed for chopping and reading recipes.
Over an island or peninsula, decorative pendants can provide a focal point as well as useful illumination. Their height is crucial. They should light the surface without obstructing conversation across it or becoming an obstacle for taller members of the household. The right height depends on the fitting, ceiling level and sightlines, so it is worth checking this with your kitchen designer and electrician before installation.
Dining areas benefit from a pendant or feature fitting centred over the table rather than the middle of the room. This visually defines the eating space and produces a more intimate pool of light. In a kitchen-diner, put dining lighting on its own circuit so it can remain on after the cooking area has been dimmed.
Choose the right light colour and brightness
Light is not simply warm or bright. The colour temperature and output both affect how the kitchen looks and feels.
For most homes, warm white lighting around 2700K to 3000K gives a welcoming appearance while still being clear enough for food preparation. Cooler light can look clinical in a kitchen-diner, especially against cream, timber or warmer-toned cabinet finishes. Brightness should be divided across the layers rather than supplied by one exceptionally bright central light. Dimmable fittings give you much more control, allowing full practical lighting for preparation and a softer setting for meals. Make sure the lamps, drivers and dimmer switches are compatible, as not every LED fitting dims well with every control.
Put controls where they make sense
A well-designed lighting scheme should be easy to use without thinking about it. Separate circuits are usually more practical than one switch that turns everything on at once. At a minimum, keep general lighting, under-cabinet task lighting and decorative lighting independently controlled.
Consider how you enter the room. A switch near the main doorway is essential, while a second switching point can be useful in a larger kitchen or open-plan layout. Smart controls can be useful, but they are not a substitute for sensible wiring and straightforward switches. For many households, dimmers and clearly labelled circuits are more reliable and easier for everyone to operate. Motion sensors can work in a pantry or utility area, but are not always ideal in the main kitchen where lights may turn off while someone is sitting still at the table.
Plan lighting before work begins
Lighting is much easier and more cost-effective to install before plastering, decorating and fitting the final kitchen. Once the layout is agreed, create a plan showing cabinet positions, appliance locations, ceiling fittings, wall lights, switches, dimmers and transformer or driver access points.
